Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
